Mid Trip Letdown

Mid Trip Letdown

Have you ever experienced mid-trip letdown? Most of our trips are about two weeks long… sometimes three weeks. We want to see all that we can… get the most out of that vacation time, so we tend to be on the go… non-stop.

That can be a problem. Travel is tiring. You fly to your destination and have to deal with jet lag, and then you get up early, you’re on the go all day and probably eat later at night than your used to… your schedule is all thrown off.

And there is no “weekend” to relax. So what you really need to do is to schedule in some down time, so you’ll be more up for all of the remainder of your trip. (Did you get the ups and downs of that?)

Sometimes mid-trip letdown comes when things don’t go quite as smoothly as you hoped, and you haven’t had quite enough time for relaxing.

Maybe you have had mid-trip letdown, and you just haven’t recognized it. Let me give you an example…

I love Florence. The center of the city… the part that tourists want to see… is so walkable that anyone can do it. If you get tired, there are plenty of outdoor cafes and restaurants where you can stop for a rest and refreshment.

The art is so great… Museums around every corner it seems… with an abundance of sculptures and paintings by artists everyone has heard of.

Churches overflow with great art and tombs of the famous; there are palaces and gardens to occupy you for days.

Jewelry shops on the Pont Vecchio drip with gold.

There’s great food… on the squares, in osterias, in sidewalk cafes, and of course in many restaurants.

And the gelato… can’t forget that! So many gelaterias to choose from. Makes you glad for all that walking to burn the calories!

But… The first time we went to Florence, I had a problem with it… I can’t even tell you what was really wrong. We drove into town (always a challenge), finally found our hotel, then got lost trying to find the garage. We didn’t really have enough time in the city, so we didn’t take time to sit in the piazza and just take it all in.

We saw lots of churches and museums, but I left feeling like I must have missed something, because all my friends raved about how great it was…, and I didn’t feel that. At least not then.

The next time we went, we allowed time for relaxing… maybe it helped that we had seen so much that first visit. We wandered, shopped, and sat on the squares. We happened to be in Florence during the running of the Mille Miglia road race, so we ordered lunch at one of those tourist restaurants right in front of the Duomo, and we watched the old cars “va-room” past. We had so much fun!

We’ve been back by train and by car since then too… and each time we revisit museums and churches, but we might catch a flag throwing contest on the square or sit in the garden and just enjoy the view.

So schedule in some time to just sit and relax. You may not entirely be able to avoid mid-trip letdown, but you can recognize that it might happen and that down time will rejuvenate you and help keep you going for the rest of your trip.
